Entertainment giant Sony is taking a major step forward in the world of blockchain with the official launch of Soneium, its Layer 2 platform on Ethereum. After four months of successful tests that attracted more than 14 million users and processed 47 million transactions, this initiative represents a turning point in the adoption of blockchain by entertainment giants.

Sony Block Solutions Labs (Sony BSL), the group’s blockchain subsidiary, officially deployed Soneium on Monday, culminating an intensive testing phase that began last August.

Built on Optimism Foundation’s OP Stack technology, the platform aims to simplify blockchain interaction for creators and their audiences. In particular, it offers innovative tools such as NFT-based fan wiring systems and an incubation program called Soneium Spark.

Sota Watanabe, director of Sony BSL, emphasizes the democratic ambitions of the project: “ Soneium is for everyone“. The goal is to integrate the general public into the blockchain ecosystem without prior knowledge of Web3, thanks to an approach focused on chain abstraction.

The success of this approach is already illustrated by the Soneium Spark incubation program, which selected 32 projects from more than 1,700 applications, demonstrating the strong interest of developers in entertainment-focused blockchains.

A complete ecosystem focused on the future of entertainment

The recent integration of USDC as the main exchange token on Soneium through a partnership with Circle strengthens the credibility and utility of the platform. Sony BSL is not just developing a simple blockchain infrastructure; the company aims to create a bridge between Web2 and Web3 through a user-centric approach.

The company is also exploring new frameworks to protect the rights of creators and implement mechanisms for a fair distribution of value between creators and fans. The initiative covers Sony’s various subsidiaries covering the film, music and video game industries.

The success of the Soneium Spark incubation program demonstrates the growing interest of developers in entertainment-focused blockchains, paving the way for an ecosystem rich in innovation and opportunity.

With a focus on “blockchain that evokes emotion and empowers creativity”, Sony BSL is redefining the standards of the digital entertainment industry and positioning Soneium as a major player in the convergence between blockchain technology and content creation.
